Shinzo Abe 'Legacy' Including Premiere Of Japan

The assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe last week was widely perceived as the 67-year-old was one of the key players in bringing the Las Vegas-style integrated casino resort to the Asian country.

Abe, 67, was killed on Friday afternoon during the campaign of fellow Liberal Democrat Kei Sato in the city of Narashi in Honshu, according to a report by Inside Asian Gaming. The source said the Tokyo-born Abe was shot twice by an assassin who used a homemade firearm, and was later pronounced dead at a university hospital in a nearby country.

Stable Stewardship:

Abe was first elected as Japan's prime minister in September 2006, but reportedly lasted only a year before he was asked to take sides with the more popular Yasuo Fukuda. The Seikei graduate began his second term as Japan's main politician in December 2012, and reportedly left only 2,822 days later due to poor health, putting him among the island nation's highest-ranking officials.

Typical examples include:

Inside Asian Gaming reports that the idea of bringing a gambling-friendly integrated casino resort to Japan first began in 2009 as a way to attract more foreign tourists and improve the faltering economy. A special government panel has officially begun investigating the possibility of using the newly opened Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa development in Singapore as a potential model.

Initial inspection:

When the Liberal Democratic Party regained power in December 2012, Abe was reappointed prime minister and went to see the three-tower Marina Bay Sands real estate in person. Yamaguchi later included the legalization of the integrated casino resort in his "Japan is Back" economic policy and declared that such facilities would "be key to Japan's growth strategy" by allowing it to attract up to 20 million new foreign tourists a year.

Consistent campaigners:

Despite some initial protests, Abe reportedly began supporting his administration's Integrated Resorts Promotion Act in December 2016 to establish a zone where "integrated facilities combining tourism promotion and local activities" could be held. The bill also reportedly sought to break the country's long-standing ban on casino gambling by acknowledging that it needed to be run by "private operators properly supervised and controlled by the government."

Rewarding Realization:

In order to further realize his dream of bringing Las Vegas-style development to Japan, Prime Minister Abe has created a "Special Complex Tourism Facility Area Development Promotion Headquarters" since March 2017. This is reportedly due to the official ratification of the casino activation integrated resort implementation bill in 16 months, which aims to generate gambling profits by promoting "long-stay tourism" through the preview of "international competitive and attractive characteristics" using "private originality and dynamics."
